One of the most anticipated parts of my journey to the pacific north-west was the side trip to Mount St Helens. On my very first trip to Canada, I'd flown right over the volcano. It had an elegant tuft of smoke, and a still very impressive blast field. This time, I was determined to see it from the ground. We were almost thwarted by snow, which blocked the road to the east of the volcano, but we came at it from the west on the next day. The top of the volcano was covered in cloud, but I was very chuffed to see the ash fields and blown-down trees.
