When I go to Alcatraz, I usually take the trolley down to the ferry pier. It's the easiest route, but also the most delightful, because the F line uses a variety of old trams from all over the world. There's even one from Melbourne, somewhat erroneously indicating that it is on its way to St Kilda Beach. This orange one is a favourite of mine - it's from Milan, and features lovely wooden fittings and glass lampshades. It was too crowded on Friday for me to get close to the windows, but they feature a variety of signs with exhortatory phrases in Italian. I suspect they are telling me to keep my arms inside the tram, and to avoid the temptation to spit.

Is the route number 96 (the one that goes through North Melbourne past my sister's place)?
The other possibility is the 79 from North Richmond via Chapel Street.
We hope they've got it right.
If it's trams you're interested in, you'll also need to stop in for an ale at the Canberra Tradesmen's Club ('the Tradies') at Dickson. They've converted about 20 old trams - including a New Orleans street car and a rare old LA tram - into dining rooms.
